Catskill Conservation Corps volunteers build trail at future site of Catskill Interpretive Center

Trail work at the Catskill Interpretive CenterOn Sunday, September 21, 2014 The Catskill Conservation Corps partnered with the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference and hosted volunteers at the Catskill Interpretive Center site to help build what will become a new interpretive hiking trail at the Center when it opens in 2015.

The work trip was led by experienced leaders of the Trail Conference, who together with the volunteers, were able to construct over 100 feet of new trail climbing the hillside between the site of the Center and a vista and picnic area that will be created at the crest of the hillside above.

The Trail Conference’s Catskills Trail Crew will continue to build and develop this new interpretive hiking trail as part of the development of the Catskill Interpretive Center. Due to the location of the trail, much of the ongoing work will include side-hilling and tread construction. Future work will also include crib wall construction, trail surfacing and the construction of a bridge near the start of the trail. The trail is expected to be complete in the summer of 2015.

This work trip was part of a series of workshops and work trips that will be held at the Catskill Interpretive Center in Mount Tremper. The workshops and work trips are being held to both build the interpretive hiking trail on the property that will be open to the public for hiking and to train volunteers in trail construction techniques for future trail crew projects in the Catskills.

The public is always welcome to join the Catskills Trail Crew on the work site and you do not need to be a member of the Trail Conference to join the Catskills Trail Crew. No experience is necessary, and the Trail Conference will provide the tools and the training on site before they get started.
